White Rock Legion, Branch #8, made a donation of $10,000 from its Poppy Fund to the Surrey Hospital & Outpatient Centre Foundation on March 23rd 2017. In return, to show its appreciation and gratitude for the White Rock Legion's continued financial support of the Surrey Memorial, Yolanda presented Branch #8 with a plaque honouring it's current and past donations. While attending our General Meeting, Yolanda also made a presentation to explain developments in the thoracic surgery program at Surrey Memorial Hospital. Five new state-of-the-art pieces of equipment are being purchased to make Surrey the key centre in Canada for minimally invasive surgery. As a result, Surrey will become the centre for training Canada's next generation of thoracic surgeons. The new surgical techniques are hugely beneficial to patients undergoing lung, stomach and esophagus cancer surgery.
White Rock Legion, Branch #8, made a donation of $10,000 from its Poppy Fund to the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation on February 23rd 2017. This donation will be applied towards the completion of a 200 bed senior care facility near the hospital. Presenting the cheque to Jim Bindon, Director, Philanthropy, Peace Arch Hospital Foundation is Branch #8 Poppy Campaign Chairman, Mark Bechard.
The BC Cancer Foundation accepts a $10,000 donation from the Royal Canadian Legion White Rock Branch #8 Poppy Fund on November 24th 2016. The donation was gratefully accepted and will be used towards the purchase of equipment and facilities for Surrey Memorial Hospital.
On Sunday June 19th 2016, Branch #8 held a fundraising BBQ to aid the victims of the recent Five Corners Fire. The driving force in the success of this event was Nicole MacKenzie, and her team at MacKarino's Kitchen. Collectively a total of $5,200 was raised by members and attendees. Members of the Branch Executive accepted an invitation to attend lunch at the Kent Street Seniors Centre on Friday March 18th 2016 to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of its "Fresh and Lively Friday" luncheon for seniors. A symbolic cheque was presented to the Centre commemorating 20 years of giving by the White Rock Legion - Branch #8. Between 1996 and 2016 an accumulated total of $20,000 has been donated. At the microphone, addressing the Legion team, is Helen Neal, long-time and dedicated coordinator of the "Fresh and Lively Friday Luncheon" who was there to some 20 years ago to receive the first $1,000 donation from the Legion.
The Steel School Of Irish Dance attended Branch #8 on Friday March 18th 2016 to celebrate its St Patrick's week activities. The dancers put on an excellent performance of Irish Dance and were well received in front of a full house of members and guests by a show of loud applause. Dancers from left to right are Anika, Emma A., Emma S., Gemma, Brianna, Morgan, Ashley and Pixie. The Steel School is regularly represented at the World Championships held in Ireland and are currently proud to have a school member attending the Riverdance Academy in Dublin.
Gratefully accepting a donation of $4,500.00 made to the Peach Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation on February 25th 2016 is Teresa Quach, Coordinator. Presenting the cheque is Mark Bechard, Chairman Poppy Campaign for the White Rock Legion - Branch #8, accompanied by Don Vilac (centre), Sergeant-at-Arms. The donation represents one of a number already made this year by the White Rock Legion.
As part of the Legion's commitment, White Rock - Branch #8 donates a major portion of its poppy and gaming trust funds to a variety of worthy causes. In 2015, the White Rock Legion donated in excess of $60,000 to its veterans, community and country.
